Modii

Modii Parking Finder

At Modii, I led the design and product strategy for two web-based tools: Modii Admin for parking managers and Parking Finder for users. I crafted user-friendly dashboards and real-time parking solutions that reduced administrative tasks by 30% and increased user engagement by 25% during major events. As the only designer, I also gathered feedback from live demos at trade shows to refine and improve the products continuously.

Project overview

As the sole designer at Modii, a growing startup focused on revolutionizing parking management, I have been at the intersection of design, product strategy, and user experience. With full ownership over both design and product decisions, I played a pivotal role in crafting an intuitive suite of products that cater to both parking managers and end users. I was also responsible for live product demos at trade shows, offering me firsthand insight into customer needs and reactions.

The Challenge

Parking management, especially in dense urban areas and large university campuses, involves handling complex assets, policies, and data. The current market lacked an easy-to-use, real-time system that could provide both asset managers and parking seekers with seamless, up-to-date information.

Key problems:

  • Parking managers struggled with scattered tools for asset management, event coordination, and policy creation.
  • End users needed a reliable, real-time system to locate parking spaces efficiently, particularly during high-demand events.
  • The user experience of existing solutions was fragmented and unintuitive, leading to frustration and decreased usage.

My Role

I served as both the lead designer and helped as a product manager for Modii. This dual responsibility gave me the freedom to steer the project from a holistic view, ensuring that design decisions were aligned with the broader product goals.

  • Product Strategy & Prioritization: I worked closely with the development and leadership teams to decide which features to prioritize based on user feedback, competitive analysis, and market trends.
  • Design & UX/UI Leadership: I designed the entire user experience and interface for both the Modii Admin and Parking Finder products, focusing on usability, simplicity, and data visualization.
  • Trade Show Engagement: I regularly presented live demos of the product suite to potential clients at trade shows, allowing me to gather direct user feedback and iterate on designs quickly.

The Solution

Modii Admin and Parking Finder

Our solution was divided into two key products:

Modii Admin

A robust tool for parking managers to streamline the management of parking assets, Modii Admin allows for real-time updates and data-driven decisions.

  • Features:
    • Event creation and management
    • Policy assignment (e.g., pricing, accessibility requirements)
    • Real-time financial and occupancy dashboards
    • Simplified management of permits, lots, and parking spots

My focus was on creating an intuitive dashboard that offered rich data without overwhelming the user. By utilizing clear visualizations and customizable reports, I ensured that parking managers could make informed decisions quickly.

Parking Finder

The companion app that connects end users to parking data from the Modii Admin, Parking Finder simplifies the search for parking through real-time information.

  • Features:
    • Event parking availability
    • Shuttle tracking for large campuses
    • Permit-based parking locations
    • ADA spots and pricing information

I designed Parking Finder to be user-centric, reducing friction in the parking experience. Clear, color-coded maps, intuitive filtering options, and seamless permit integration provided a highly functional yet user-friendly experience.

Design Process

  • Research & Discovery:I began with extensive user research, conducting interviews with parking managers, administrators, and end users. This helped me understand pain points on both ends of the spectrum—management and consumer.
  • Wireframing & Prototyping:Using Figma, I rapidly iterated on wireframes and prototypes, ensuring that both Modii Admin and Parking Finder addressed the core needs identified during research. I collaborated with developers to ensure that technical limitations were addressed early.
  • Usability Testing & Feedback Loops:Live demos at trade shows provided real-world testing environments. I incorporated feedback in real-time, refining workflows and UI elements based on how users interacted with the product.
  • Launch & Continuous Improvement:After launching both products, I set up systems to continuously gather user feedback, further refining features and usability. I led the charge in ensuring product updates were frequent and meaningful, directly improving the user experience.
  • Results

  • Increased Efficiency for Parking Managers: Modii Admin helped parking managers reduce the time spent on administrative tasks by over 30%, thanks to its real-time dashboards and simplified policy management.
  • Improved User Engagement: Parking Finder saw a 25% increase in user engagement during high-traffic events like football games, due to real-time event parking updates and shuttle tracking.
  • Successful Trade Show Presence: Live demos resulted in several key partnerships and expansion opportunities, as attendees were impressed by both the design and functionality of the Modii suite.
  • Lessons Learned

  • Empathy in Design: By deeply understanding both parking managers and end users, I was able to design solutions that catered to their specific needs. This balance of B2B and B2C design thinking was key to Modii’s success.
  • Agility is Key: As the sole designer, I had to pivot quickly based on user feedback and changing business priorities. This experience sharpened my ability to make rapid, yet informed decisions without sacrificing quality.

    Conclusion

At Modii, I was more than just a designer; I was a product strategist, a problem-solver, and an advocate for the user. My work not only shaped the future of parking management but also demonstrated the critical role that thoughtful design and strategic product decisions play in solving real-world problems.
